Team Development - Belbin®
Team Roles
Aurora TDS uses the
internationally renown Belbin®
Team Roles methodology for
developing effective teams.
What are Belbin's Team Roles?
From research conducted over many
years Dr Meredith Belbin has
discovered that teams work most
effectively when they contain
members with a range of preferred
roles. These have come to be
known as Shaper, Coordinator,
Teamworker, Completer Finisher,
Implementer, Monitor Evaluator,
Plant, Resource Investigator and
Specialist.

A team with too many Plants and not
enough Completer Finishers is likely
to create lots of innovative ideas
(the role of Plants) but there will
be no-one to
put them into action
(the role of Completer Finishers).
A team with more than one Shaper
should expect conflict as they
compete to have things done their
way.

How to use Team Roles
Knowledge of individuals' preferred
team roles can be used in three
ways:
-
To select a new team with the
full range of preferred roles
(like selecting a sports team
- choosing players with the
range of skills and attributes
needed to fill all the
positions)
-
To build high performance teams
-
To resolve conflicts in teams
In all three cases, the Team Roles
methodology is a powerful way to
develop effective teams,
particularly when combined with
Tuckman's model of teams Forming,
Storming, Norming, Performing.

Team Roles Explained
How does it work?
Aurora arranges for team members to
complete a straightforward
questionnaire and detailed reports
are produced which describe
individuals' preferred roles when
working in a team.
This information is then analysed
and discussed in a workshop so that
the overall team attributes are
fully understood.
An Aurora facilitator then runs a
series of practical activities that
develop effective teamworking.
Most delegates find these activities
interesting, challenging and fun.
Team Roles help with Recruitment and
Selection
Team Roles can also help with
recruitment and selection.
An individual job role can be analysed to
determine which combination of Team
Roles is most relevant and
applicants can be matched with them
through their own Team Roles profile.
This is a reliable way of fitting
job applicants to vacancies.
